In June of 2022, I visited Colorado College, a stunning liberal arts college set near the base of the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado’s second largest city, Colorado Springs. Colorado College differentiates itself from peers through its Block Plan. Students take one class for three+ hours per day for three-and-a-half weeks in each of the 8 blocks per year. The benefits of this type of scheduling include the opportunity to delve deeply into a subject with extensive opportunities for field work and hands-on learning without the worry of it conflicting with other courses. It’s also great for the campus culture as all students participate in courses from 9-12, leaving the afternoons free for clubs, organizations, and work-study/internships. The Freshman Year Program includes a freshman writing class and a college orientation type class. Freshman all live together and have an upperclassman mentor, an academic advisor, as well as a HUB advisor. Psychology, Political Science, Economics, and Environmental Studies are the most popular majors while new areas of study include Southwest Studies, Business Economics, and Global Health. Admission is highly selective with an overall acceptance rate of 14.3%.
